Serve with Pancakes Serving Up Hope

Every other Saturday during the semester, we serve freshly made pancakes topped with our folks’ choices of butter, fruit, and chocolate chips! We are aware that we cannot solve the issue of homelessness downtown only through providing food; the program builds relationships and trust with the families and veterans in need. We aim to humanize folks who have been marginalized and mistreated in the San Diego community. Pancakes SUH serves as a platform for people who are looking for volunteer opportunities and resource agencies that assist those who are in need.

    • September 14 and 28
    • October 12 and 26
    • November 9 and 23

Rachel’s Night Shelter & Migrant Ministry at OLG Parish

Every few weeks, USD students and University Ministry staff prepare and deliver dinner to residents at both Rachel’s Night Shelter and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Rachel’s Night Shelter is an emergency shelter for women who are unhoused in San Diego and looking for short-term, supportive, and safe housing. Our Lady of Guadalupe Migrant Ministry offers meals and shelter to migrant men who either have no destination or are seeking opportunities to travel to their next destination.

This semester, we will once again be able to prepare meals to share and enjoy with the residents at Rachel’s and OLG Parish. Our evenings will consist of cooking, eating, and engaging in a conversation about topics of migration and homelessness to deepen our understanding and commitment to justice and social action.

Trips to Rachel’s Night Shelter and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish are open to all current USD undergraduate, graduate, and law students.

Go on a University Ministry Immersion Trip

During Winter Intersession and Spring Break, University Ministry holds local immersion experiences in San Diego and Tijuana that explore the principles of human dignity, solidarity, the common good, and a preferential option for the poor and vulnerable through relationship building, service, education, and reflection. Students will stay with our close community partners in our local community to learn more about the social justice issues impacting our local community while being in relationship and solidarity with those in our community.

    Prep a Care Kit

Twice a semester, USD students and University Ministry staff partner with Christ Child Society to make quilts and pack items necessary for mothers and newborns who are in their first two weeks of being born. These kits will be offered to families through various organizations and hospitals around San Diego.

This semester, we will once again be able to gather to prepare these kits with Christ Child Society. In addition to packing care kits, gatherings consist of dialogue and reflection on our commitment to justice and social action, especially to the most vulnerable populations in our community. This service opportunity will take place on campus in the Ministry Center and is open to all current USD undergraduate, graduate, and law students.

    Become a BSRC P.E.E.R. Mentor

The Promoting Excellence Education and Retention (P.E.E.R) Mentorship program is a one-semester program designed to guide first-year Black students during their transition into the University of San Diego (USD) community. In this program, incoming first-year students will be paired with Black students who have been a part of the USD community for at least one year. Through the mentorship program, first-year students should be able to have access to a supportive space with their mentor and to address any concerns regarding their transition and relationship to the university at large. This program will also encourage and promote community building among Black students at the university.
